Partial discharges behavior under different rectified waveforms

2017

In this work, a previous software used to simulate partial discharges (PDs) under Alternating Current (AC) stress has been modified in order to evaluate the PDs behavior under a voltage stress close to the Direct Current (DC) waveform. By using a full-wave and a half-wave rectifier, the specimen with an air void defects has been subjected to a gradual constant stress. Finally, a capacitive filter has been inserted in order to produce a steadier voltage supply. Simulation results show that under an almost DC waveform, the PDs activity become less compared to AC stress.

The α and γ plasma modes in plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition with O2-N2 capacitive discharges

2017

Two distinguishable plasma modes in the O2–N2 radio frequency capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) used in remote plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) were observed. Optical emission spectroscopy and spectra interpretation with rate coefficient analysis of the relevant processes were used to connect the detected modes to the α and γ modes of the CCP discharge. To investigate the effect of the plasma modes on the PEALD film growth, ZnO and TiO2 films were deposited using both modes and compared to the films deposited using direct plasma. The growth rate, thickness uniformity, elemental composition, and crystallinity of the films were found to correlate with the deposition mode. In re…

Evaluation of the MOZAIC Capacitive Hygrometer during the airborne field study CIRRUS-III

2018

The MOZAIC Capacitive Hygrometer (MCH) is usually operated aboard passenger aircraft in the framework of MOZAIC (Measurement of Ozone by Airbus In-Service Aircraft) for measuring atmospheric relative humidity (RH). In order to evaluate the performance of the MCH, the instrument was operated aboard a Learjet 35A research aircraft as part of the CIRRUS-III field study together with a closed-cell Lyman-α fluorescence hygrometer (Fast in situ Stratospheric Hygrometer, or FISH) and an open-path tunable diode laser system (Open-path Jülich Stratospheric TDL ExpeRiment, or OJSTER) for water vapour measurement. After reducing the CIRRUS-III data set to data corresponding to MOZAIC aircraft operatio…

Passive properties of lean duplex stainless steels after long-term ageing in air studied using EBSD, AES, XPS and local electrochemical impedance spe…

2013

Abstract Passivity of duplex stainless steel was studied after long-term ageing in air using local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, AES, XPS and EBSD. After mechanical polishing, the passive film was homogeneous and had a capacitive behaviour described by the CPE. After long-term ageing, a small thickening was detected and O2−/OH− was significantly higher in the austenite than in the ferrite. Austenite behaved as a blocking electrode whereas two capacitive loops were observed in the ferrite (low value of O2−/OH). The loop at high frequencies was related with the oxygen reduction and the loop at low frequencies was connected with the passive film.

Dynamic thermal expansivity near the glass transition

2000

Dielectric techniques were used to investigate the thermal expansivity of polystyrene films. Capacitive scanning dilatometry (CSD) employs temperature ramping in order to monitor the non-linear structural relaxation in the glass transformation range and to quantify liquid fragility. In the linear response regime, the complex thermal expansivity is obtained as a function of the temperature cycling frequency and is observed to reflect the structural relaxation.

Electrochemical capacitance spectroscopy and capacitive relaxation of the changeover process in iron hexacyanoferrate molecular compound

2010

Abstract In this work it was proposed the use electrochemical capacitance spectroscopy (ECS) to evaluate the storage process during changeover in FeHCF compound. The approach is equivalent to electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) albeit from such analysis it was possible to focus attention on the capacitive and dielectric relaxation instead of the dispersive relaxation related to charge transfer. From such approach it was possible to obtain complementary information on the role played by [Fe 2+ (CN) 6 ] 4− vacancies during the changeover process. It was observed that Fe 3+ (NC) 5 OH − clusters located in these vacancies mediate an electronic and ionic coupled trapping/detrapping proc…

Study of the effect of the membrane composition on ion transfer across a supported liquid membrane

2003

Abstract The rate of ion transfer across the supported liquid membrane (SLM) is studied in the rotating diffusion cell (RDC), varying the chemical composition of the SLM from net-cloth supported gel membranes to radiation-grafted polymer membranes. Steady-state current–voltage curves are measured as a function of the rotation rate, and values for the standard rate constant, k 0 , are determined for a series of tetraalkylammonium cations from the analysis of the initial slopes and the diffusion limiting currents. The analysis gives values for k 0 of the order of 10 −2 –10 −4 cm s −1 , which is in rather good agreement with the values found in the literature for this type of the system. As co…

Electromagnetic Full-Wave Simulation of Partial Discharge Detection in High Voltage AC Cables

2019

Partial discharge (PD) activity in the insulation system of an electrical equipment can determine the failure of the whole apparatus. PD sensors are widely used in high-voltage electrical systems as the main elements of a detecting system oriented to real time monitoring. Recently, non-invasive sensors have been proposed in industrial applications for cable and other sensitive electrical parts: they are based both on capacitive and on the electromagnetic radiating coupling. In order to assess the real performance of a new sensor produced by a high voltage AC cables manufacturer, the paper proposes electromagnetic fullwave simulation results.

Reliable TDC position determination: a comparison of different thermodynamic methods through experimental data and simulations

2008

It is known to internal combustion researcher that the correct determination of the crank position when the piston is at Top Dead Centre (TDC) is very important, since an error of 1 crank angle degree (CAD) can cause up to a 10% evaluation error on indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) and a 25% error on the heat released by the combustion: the TDC position should be then known within a precision of 0.1 CAD. This task can be accomplished by means of a dedicated capacitive sensor, which allows a measurement within the required 0.1 degrees precision. Such a sensor has a substantial cost and its use is not really fast; a different approach can be followed using a thermodynamic method, whose…
